May Day Surprise Challenge...
So I missed May Day. But I have decided to do May month instead! Posts will be labeled May Day Surprise. (Be sure to look for them)
Anywho, a fellow reader and cute little gal over at Rapid Falls Farm blogspot (hey girl :) made a suggestion to me last winter and to be honest it has been on my mind ever since.
What would everyone do if during May day or "May month" we went back to tradition and left surprises for people. But instead of commercialized gifts we left a tomatoe plant!
I think this idea is fabulous. Close your eyes and think of a tomatoe. The taste, smell, texture, the all around greatness it can bring to a salad or sandwich or anything really.
Now imagine this. You open your door one morning to find a delicate little seedling. You have no idea what it is! You naturally smell it and instantly your mouth starts to water. You plant the seedling and watch and wait. Taking extra care to water it and weed it. Then one day you go out and over night your little seedling is covered in beautifully rippened tomatoes.
You can't wait. You instantly pull one off and take a bite. The taste is electrifying. You've never tasted anything better.
Now here you are two months later smiling from a gift someone gave you and wanting more. This is the plan exactly.
Sometimes all it takes is one little seedling and one bite to get hooked. Next thing you know your adding a few chickens for eggs and adding herbs to the flower garden.
My point is the road to being self sufficient may seem over-whelming all at once but that's why you have to take one step or 'bite' at a time. Eventually you will get there.
And even though you might not be able to live completly off your land every little bit truly helps.
So this month I am doing a challenge. I am asking everyone to join in to May month with me!
Here are the rules: You can either leave a seed or seedling on someone's doorstep or plant one in their garden. (this includes veggies, herbs, and flowers) Leave hand written instructions on how to care for the plant but no name or package. It's suppose to be a surprise!Another idea is to leave a homemade item. Leave a dozen eggs, Goats milk soap, chapstick, lotion, cheese, home-raised meat, etc.
It's simple. Now one more step. When you do a May Day Surprise please email a pic of the item and a little detail and your name. But do not include the name of the recipient.I will post them here on my blogspot and facebook! This is going to be so much fun.Happy May Daying!!!
